Getting ready to go
Boy am I stressed. There are a lot of things that I have to take care of before leaving, and I'm afraid I'll forget something. And to top off all the stressing about my trip, I have had school stuff to think about. Today I sent in an essay I had to do. And tomorrow is my last exam, and also the last thing I have to do this fall. Then my vacation begins. That means that my vacation begins tomorrow at about four o'clock. Happy happy joy joy!
So anyway, I finally heard from the people at the University of Oregon concerning the homestay -program. This means that I now have a place to go to in Eugene. I am going to stay with an older couple for a few days before I get my own place. I thought I was going to be staying at a student's appartment, since that is what they told me would happen. But now they're telling me that I'm going to live with this couple. It's probably a good thing, though. It will most likely be much more comfortable there than in a little appartment. I still have a little problem. I can go live with them from January 3rd to 7th, but I am going to be in Oregon January 1st. I guess I'll have to stay at a hotel two nights.
I have strated getting my hands on small bottles that I am going to put my shampoo, soap, moisturizing cream and other liquid stuff in, since they have to fit in a one liter bag. Because I am taking four planes to get to Portland, I am quite sure they will loose my luggage. That is why I need to take everything I might need for about a week with me in the bag I am taking inside the plane. That sentence sounded weird. Well anyway, I'll also have to take a change of clothes. And all this plus some other stuff have to fit into my bookbag. I wonder how I will pull that off.
My New Year will be quite interesting this year. I'm going to leave early in the morning on January 1st, so no partying for me. Jussi and I have planned to celebrate New Years in Helsinki, so that we won't have to drive there late at night. And Fiona, my puppy dog, will maybe come too. Wanna take Jussi in for the night (or morning actually), Elina and Jaakko?
So Christmas is getting nearer, and so is my leaving. In a way I am looking forward to Christmas, but in a way I am not. The closer it comes, the closer my trip comes. I will miss Jussi and Fiona a lot, and everyone else too. But this is what I wanted to do, so there's no turning back now. And it's only six months. That's not such a long time, I think.
Most likely the next time I'll write, I'll be in Eugene. Maybe. But Merry Christmas everyone and a Happy New Year! :)

We'll definately take Fiona for the night. ;) And maybe Jussi too. hih. Lovely lovely. Has he even seen our flat? I'm pretty sure you've been here, but I don't think he has.
It's perfect. U can bring all our xmas presents to us when u come into town. Hurray! No carrying.

I'm sure what ever you have forgotten will take care of itself. I can think about what I had to do when I went and we can discuss it while baking and cooking for Christmas. :)
They also lost my luggage but luckily on the last flight so I got it back really fast. Be prepared for the couple to be like religious or something. ;) But I'm sure they'll be nice. And most likely they will just have tons of food and things for you all ready and they want to get to know a finnish girl and show her "how great America is" and so on. You know the type. It should be fun.

Sounds like your trip is turning into reality quite nicely. That elderly couple gets me smiling - I can imagine some jingoistic 'may the blessings of our lord saviour..' wake ups and endless hammering of how fantastic the United States are.. hehehe ;D Hope you bear thru it ok until you get your own place.
On the other hand, they might be really sweet and kind folks who's ancestors back in the day came from Finland or some other random European country and be totally sane with their critics on government and it's array of politics. Just like all of us here in Europe.
Good thing of staying at a home is homecooked meals and infusion into the backdrop of the whole society (in other words: the elderly know it all).
Oh well, anyway I'm envious here - stuck with a mortage and tons of projects to get done. All in all, I hope you enjoy this 'preparation' time as well as it'll be something you'll remember from the trip too (at least I remember all the hassle before we moved to the states the first time). And yes, it's only for 6 months, should be easy to cope however it goes as long as world politics stay as they are (and they will).
Already looking forward to reading your thoughts on life in States... ;)
